On a side note, my wife always gives me a weird look when she comes by and sees me watching JE stuff. Lord knows what she would’ve thought if she saw me watching KAT-TUN dressed up as pirates on their personal elevators…

SHG looks at several prominent boy bands and why she’s not as interested in them as in girl groups. There’s some interesting observations on each group covered, as well as on the nature of idols in general. It actually makes me wish for a stronger conclusion – which boils down to there’s no arguing with taste – but hopefully there’ll be future posts that carry these ideas further.

Tsukiki reviews the solo PVs from the recent NEWS tour DVD. Her two favorite videos are worth watching by any fan of Jpop. Shige’s is especially impressive – what the hell, it may be the best PV I’d seen all year, and I’m already humming the song to myself.

Seriously, try that video out. You won’t regret it.

HamsapSukebe – Ramblings of a jobless bum.: Jmovie review: Yatterman.

Akiramike’s refusal to watch anything with Fukada Kyoko clashes with his desire to try out anything by Miike Takashi, and Miike wins out. Whether or not Akiramike won out by giving in is open for debate, given the weirdness and absurdity of the movie – which stars Arashi’s Sakurai Sho! – which apparently risks lapsing into incoherence. The screenshots he chose certainly look quite tempting – is that a musical number I see? Still, it’d be funny if JE fangirls watch the film just for Sho and wind up having to sit through robots fondling their robotic nipples.

Attending the Webster Hall show seems to have done something to Kimitsu, as she’s now looking around at other non-Johnny’s acts and re-expanding her musical horizons some. It’s a better move than what I went through – after H!P lost its hold on me, I just started looking for more teenage bikini idols sans music.

Anyway, I’m not sure if it’s a sign of more posting on Minna Star, but my fingers are crossed.

Setting aside Sho – because he’s often set aside – this sounds like a very interesting special, mixing drama with actual documentary footage to look at the Kobe Earthquake of 1995. Done right, it not only becomes a gripping drama, but an important historical record.

The basketball drama earns all top prizes except Best Supporting Actor… which goes to JE himbo Nishikido Ryo, so at least they kept it in the family. Actually, JE did very well, as drunken nudist Tsuyoshi and Tackey respectively placed second and third for best actor.

Pink Wota » [News] 60th Kouhaku Set to be Most Awesome EVER..

Vee is delighted that three major girl groups appear this time – Morning Musume, Perfume, and AKB48 – though she also notes a great deal of other Red Team goodness including the return of Amuro Namie. I’m not a fan of Superfly but I think she could bring the house down with the right song. Johnny’s is well represented by Arashi, TOKIO, and of course SMAP. Maybe SMAP can make the effort and follow the other two to the Johnny’s Countdown this time.

The one thing that strikes me is the dog that didn’t bark: I’m recognizing so many names on both team lists that it seems enka is getting very short shrift this time around. Coincidence? A deliberate appeal to younger viewers? Where’s Wada Akiko, at least?

Still, this IS very impressive. While I’m still anticipating Johnny’s Countdown more, there should be a great deal to enjoy on Kouhaku this time around.

The K8 boys really should’ve just stopped the french kissing for a while and stuck with heavy petting until flu season was over. That said, my favorite K8, sexy Yokoyama Yu, is one of those stricken, so I wish them all a speedy recovery.

Hey, he’s worked with Clint Eastwood, I’m sure he’ll be great in this. Or at the very least adorable, because Nino is always adorable!

And when I saw MatsuKen, I initially thought it was Matsudaira Ken and thought, “What a badass teamup! They can samba while being ultraviolent!” Alas, no, it’s some young actor who I’m sure doesn’t have a series of novelty hits of his own.

(And if you don’t know what I’m talking about, check this out. We should all aspire to be as cool as MatsuKen. The real Matsuken, I mean.)

MB loves this series starring Matsumoto Jun and Aragaki Yui, and believes it has an important message about tolerance. But what about the other side of the equation? After all, with the persistent Hitler fascination that happens in Japan, isn’t it kinda surprising nobody’s tried to turn Triumph of the Will into a dorama yet? Pink Wota » [News] NO ONE LIKES IDOL GROUPS ANYMORE OH NO..

Vee shares a poll about favorite musical acts in Japan, with breakdowns in both age and gender. The only female idol group to crack the list is AKB48, while Johnny’s acts – especially Arashi – fare much better. As Vee notes, the absence of Perfume is interesting – especially given how well their albums have sold.

That said, it’s nice to see B’z still rocking Japan after all these decades!
