Super Happy Genki Chimes In On The Koha’s Graduation

December 6, 2009 | Ray Mescallado | Tags: , , | Comments (0)

“She’s a genki girl, in a genki world… living life spastic, she’s cracktastic!” – SUPER HAPPY GENKI HYPERFORCE GO!.

Aside from one odd statement in the beginning – “She is truly the first to be cast adrift on her own” (what about Asuka and Ayappe?) – this is a thoughtful take on where both the Koha and Morning Musume will be heading from this point forward.

I can appreciate taking the time to ask if this is a time to dissolve Morning Musume – but even though I’m not a fan of the current line-up, the economics clearly don’t encourage this. The wota dollars aren’t only continuing to pour in, but they’re tapping overseas as well. Once the H!P wota find something better to spend their money on – AKB, say, or porn – then there’s some worries to consider.

Hello!Blog Will Miss The Koha

Hello!Blog – Koha, You’ll Be Missed.

The best part for me is when Paul says he likes to think he’s not much of a fan. Yes, and I don’t like looking at junior idols in bikinis. However, that’s just part of a very genial, self-effacing aassessment of the impact Koha’s departure is having on Paul – especially with the honest assessment that he’s not as likely to follow her career post-MM.

Conflict Productions Gets Lachrymose Over The Koha

December 6, 2009 | Ray Mescallado | Tags: , , | Comments (0)

Kusumi Koharu Sotsugyou Shimasu « Conflict Productions.

siggy gets teary-eyed and nostalgic over the departure of the crackhead, since she’s the first Musume he’s seen go through the complete cycle of audition, induction, blossoming, and the boot.

Now that I think about it, I can say the same actually – I got in when Nacchi graduated, so it’s about the same time as siggy – but look at it differently. Thanks to the interwebs and copious downloading, we can track the entire career of any of the Musumes from start to finish. Having it take place in real time is just more excruciatingly slow, and makes you want the girl to get out already to fresh fields and pastures new.

Oh, and every time I see somebody compare a relationship with an idol to being a parent? It makes me very very worried about that person’s future children. Seriously, it’s nothing like that.

Kusumi Koharu Jump subbed « Morningtime.

The Hello! Fansubs translation of the making-of for Koharu’s latest photobook inspires a screencap-heavy lovefest for good ol’ Crackity Jones in all her bikini-tastic glory. The commentary tries hard to be creepy – which is always appreciated around here – but doesn’t always make it fresh and clever. I’m still not sure if the pink oboe line works or not, though the conversation with the screencap translations was fun.

The Koha Roundtable

September 22, 2009 | Ray Mescallado, murr, wendy and Vee | Tags: , , , , | Comments (3)

The news of Kusumi Koharu’s graduation from Morning Musume raised quite a stir in our corner of the J-blogosphere, as coverage here and at Intl Wota can attest. Always open to experiment, I decided to run an ad hoc roundtable to discuss what happened to Koha and what it means for Hello! Project’s future. DH’s regular contributor Vee was of course ready to join in; bloggers / wotachatters Murr and Wendy also threw their hats in the ring. (Unfortunately, illness kept Wendy from doing the last round of questions.)

The roundtable started Sunday night and a major new development – Tsunku making explicit that he ordered Koha’s graduation – occurred while e-mails were flying.

Kubler Ross Has Nothing On Wotaku Now!

Wotaku Now! » Goodbye my darling Koharu.

Shirow’s been wonderful at satirizing the melodramatic excesses of wota and their attitudes towards their favorite idols. Now he pokes fun at himself with an over-the-top howl about Koha graduating, bringing in the five steps of grief and throwing in some interesting variations. But with all this playacting and cartoonish bawwwing, a part of me does wonder how he really feels about the news. Can’t be too bad, right? I mean, life goes on, there’s bigger things to consider. Miracle in the Hole: Kusumi Koharu « Conflict Productions.

siggy considers all the special treatment Koha has received from the very start – attention and perks that weren’t handed to others so readily (or at all). Also, the distinction of her idol persona – the crack-tastic high energy thang – is contrasted to her apparently more subdued persona away from the camera. And to me, that’s a good chunk of why being an idol is such hard work…

Selective Hearing Muses On The Loss Of Eyecandy From Momusu

Kusumi Koharu Graduates From Morning Musume & H!P |.

Not surprisingly, I find it refreshing that Greg is up-front about mourning Koha’s graduation as a loss of eyecandy – I don’t think it’s shallow more than being attentive to what idols are all about. He then goes on to pay his own tribute to the Miracle Girl, while musing on the questions that are on every fan’s mind.

(And for the record: the largest Morning Musume line-up was 16 at Kei’s graduation concert – way after the Golden Age – and the 15-nin line-up that followed had Tsunku swear he’d never go that large again. Which is ironic, since the 15-nin created three of the best singles in the group’s history.)

Shanimuni Paradise On That Koha Grad Thing

September 20, 2009 | Ray Mescallado | Tags: , , | Comments (0)

Woah woah woah. What? « Shanimuni Paradise.

Tsukiki shares her own take on the news, noting that the current 9-nin group is “a legendary Morning Musume lineup”, though specifying “not sales-wise, but internationally and landmark-wise”. Now, some wags would argue that the international outreach came precisely from not being able to do well enough with sales in their homeland and that the landmarks (like breaking certain records) were achieved only by hanging around long enough to pick up the scraps from the group’s formerly glorious reputation. Personally, I would argue that the Morning Musume in the public imagination – that is, the one that has assumed iconic status in Japan and can be called truly legendary – featured members that have fled the group a long, long time ago.

But maybe, just maybe, this 9-nin line-up will indeed be remembered as fondly, and be respected as much as the ones that brought us “Love Machine” and “The Peace!”. And if anyone idol’s responsible for that, it may well have been Koharu.
