Slasha On Momusu First Gen
December 22, 2009 | Ray Mescallado | Tags: Hello! Project, Morning Musume | Comments (0)
Momusu’s 1st gen: Great generation or the greatest generation? – Vox.
It seems that the main argument for first gen’s greatness is: a) they got it all started, and nothing would’ve followed without them; and b) they were around before the boyfriends, substandard songs, and scandals.
While the first argument is oddly tautological – I mean, yeah, they were the first, but that doesn’t automatically make them great. That’s like saying Pete Best is better than Ringo Starr. On the second front, first gen had its share of scandals – Ayappe got knocked up by Shinya, and Nacchi was a one-woman scandal machine for a few years. If there wasn’t much attention to this kind of stuff early on, it’s because the press probably didn’t care yet.
So what were the qualities that made first gen stand out? I agree there was something special about them, but don’t know if it was captured in this post.

2009 Recap – Hangry & Angry at Sakura-con/Morning Musume at Anime Expo |.
Greg’s decided to do year-end review posts, and starts off with the big events of the year for American fans. He expresses uncertainty about H!P visiting America again, but it seemed to me that these initial forays were precisely to cash in on the growing fanbase in America. If anything, we should start speculating when the H!P Kids and Eggs units start making their way to an anime con near you…

Super Happy Genki Chimes In On The Koha’s Graduation
December 6, 2009 | Ray Mescallado | Tags: Hello! Project, Kusumi Koharu, Morning Musume | Comments (0)
Aside from one odd statement in the beginning – “She is truly the first to be cast adrift on her own” (what about Asuka and Ayappe?) – this is a thoughtful take on where both the Koha and Morning Musume will be heading from this point forward.
I can appreciate taking the time to ask if this is a time to dissolve Morning Musume – but even though I’m not a fan of the current line-up, the economics clearly don’t encourage this. The wota dollars aren’t only continuing to pour in, but they’re tapping overseas as well. Once the H!P wota find something better to spend their money on – AKB, say, or porn – then there’s some worries to consider.

Hello!Blog – Koha, You’ll Be Missed.
The best part for me is when Paul says he likes to think he’s not much of a fan. Yes, and I don’t like looking at junior idols in bikinis. However, that’s just part of a very genial, self-effacing aassessment of the impact Koha’s departure is having on Paul – especially with the honest assessment that he’s not as likely to follow her career post-MM.

Kusumi Koharu Sotsugyou Shimasu « Conflict Productions.
siggy gets teary-eyed and nostalgic over the departure of the crackhead, since she’s the first Musume he’s seen go through the complete cycle of audition, induction, blossoming, and the boot.
Now that I think about it, I can say the same actually – I got in when Nacchi graduated, so it’s about the same time as siggy – but look at it differently. Thanks to the interwebs and copious downloading, we can track the entire career of any of the Musumes from start to finish. Having it take place in real time is just more excruciatingly slow, and makes you want the girl to get out already to fresh fields and pastures new.
Oh, and every time I see somebody compare a relationship with an idol to being a parent? It makes me very very worried about that person’s future children. Seriously, it’s nothing like that.

The Twilight of Hello! Project « Delicious Cake Project!.
In his usual amusing manner, Pata uses the Kohaku snub of Morning Musume as a chance to eulogize the group and whatever cultural relevance they had left.
Though honestly, that eulogy could’ve been held four, five years ago.
Still, I found myself laughing throughout, especially with the alternate universe without a Momusu. (Would Akina still wind up doing gravure in such a world?) So definitely give this one a read.

I can appreciate putting a positive spin on this development, what with the #4 weekly ranking and the 41st straight Top Ten single. However, 36,000 copies is low even by the current MM’s standards and it looks like any momentum from the last few singles has been lost.

Delicious Cake Project Looks At AKB48 Versus Momusu Sales Figures

Morning Musume vs. AKB48: The Real War Begins Here « Delicious Cake Project!.
Pata decides to apply a more rigorous scientific measure on the sales of each group. However, he acknowledges JE has greater sales and chooses to ignore them as a point of comparison. Why NOT contrast Arashi and KAT-TUN against MM and AKB? The numbers are available on Wikipedia, and I think it would be VERY instructive in showing how performers who are very much in the mainstream of Japanese pop culture are faring and how their fan bases behave in terms of buying their work. Because more and more, all this AKB versus MM sales stuff strikes me as piddly arguments about what’s become the high school JV squad of Japanese pop culture.

Morningtime Compares Sales Of Current H!P Acts
October 18, 2009 | Ray Mescallado | Tags: Berryz Kobo, Buono!, C-ute, Hello! Project, Morning Musume | Comments (0)
Morning Musume, Berryz, C-ute, Mano & Buono sales comparisons « Morningtime.
Longtime Momusu fans have seen such comparison charts of sales numbers, and the general conventional wisdom pans out as expected. The only notable twist: Buono! is the only H!P Kids unit to surpass an MM single sales-wise.
It’s clear that the focus here is strictly current H!P acts – in which case, why not just cover MM in the past five years? But if you are going to look at MM overall, why not bring in the other big acts from H!P’s peak years – particularly Matsuura Aya and the subgroups Minimoni, Petit Moni, and Tanpopo? I think the bigger picture that emerges would actually reflect poorly on H!P as they stand now… but without the numbers, that’s just a hunch.
(And if you really wanna embarrass H!P, then contrast sales of H!P acts over five, ten years with similarly long-lived Johnny’s acts. Arashi versus MM would be particularly illuminating.)

Not surprisingly I like the AKB48 version of Morning Musume better – especially since Acchan isn’t in it. Pata makes a compelling case for each match-up / replacement of a Momusu with an AKB girl, and has eyecandy to spare.

Selective Hearing Raids Hello! Store Again
October 16, 2009 | Ray Mescallado | Tags: Hello! Project, Morning Musume | Comments (0)
Greg dives into the breach once again, this time to buy some Morning Musume concert goods. For some reason, this makes me wonder if the nature of GETS posts will change a little. It used to be difficult – and at times cost prohibitive – to get quality Jpop-related goods. Now with the store, the ease it provides to dive right in and inundate oneself with H!P goodness has made the process seem more mundane and within reach.
It’s kind of like watching an indie band start to make waves in the majors and on the charts. You’re ecstatic that people are beginning to realize how great they are, but a little part of you mourns the secret cachet it once held.
On the bright side, it’s not like Morning Musume is anywhere near popular (or even recognized) in mainstream America, so their obscurity indie cred still applies to the big picture!

Sekushi Princess – the true story « Nyu chan desu!!!.
If ladybird’s version of events was indeed the true narrative of this PV, maybe I’d start giving a damn about Morning Musume again. It’s a fun, snarky, vulgar take on the video, with plenty of screencaps to back her version.
And while not as vile as my Berikyuu interpretations from a ways back, it certainly crosses the line here and there in a manner that made me go, “What? Did she really say that?” And that can only be a good thing, amirite?

Pink Wota Reviews Sexy Ass Grab While Getting Shnockered
October 10, 2009 | Ray Mescallado | Tags: Hello! Project, Morning Musume | Comments (0)
Pink Wota » [Review] Kimagure Princess Real Time PV Review.
While listening to Vee’s real-time review I realized this was the first MM video I sat through for more than half a minute since “Resonant Blue”. (And even then, it was just to get screencaps to call them all a bunch of filthy whores.) Like her, I’ve pretty much lost interest in MM for a long while now – though the possibility of new members gives me some hope for the future (not as much hope as I’d have if they threw out all Gokkies and Rokkies except Sayumi, but still some hope).
Anyways, Vee spends a good amount of time talking about drinking and blogging as a preface to the review, then jumps into the actual PV with a drinking game in mind. If she did apply her game to the second disk of the All-Singles Collection, she’d probably need to have her stomach pumped. The video… God, has this been what it’s like for the past two years? Really? I feel like one of those non-wota who doesn’t “get” Jpop idol groups, there’s such a sense of disconnect between what they offer and what I want. I can’t even pin it down to any one detail more than an overall sense of malaise as I watch and listen. If anything, Vee’s funny take on this video strikes me as too kind, too forgiving. But still very funny.
I mean, it says something when idols are constantly grabbing their asses and I still don’t give a shit. It’s akin to reading an overly violent superhero comic and being bored by it – the stimulation should be obvious but it’s so rote and uninspired and hackneyed that one cannot be bothered to care.
And like Vee, it’s enough to drive me to drink. Or better yet, pop me some amyl nitrite and watch Hey! Say! Jump videos.

モーニング娘。全シングルカップリングコレクション。 – Vox.
For a longtime fan like MB, this collection is a walk down nostalgia lane. And while I haven’t been a fan as long as her, the older members definitely interest me much more than the current line-up. The pictures of the older members – around the time each graduated – is a wonderful reminder of the long tradition of the group, and even made me hopeful for the future.
