What I find interesting - if not surprising – is that there isn’t a strict all-or-nothing in the case of DBSK and SuJu. That is, some break to file lawsuits, others do not. You’d think a stronger show of solidarity would have a greater impact on the negotiations. The reality, though, is that it’s every boy band idol for himself, and each person sees their career doing better (or at least surviving) in a different way.

I don’t doubt the veracity of the health claims – it’s too serious to make up, especially if this goes to court – but I do admire how it’s a wonderful narrative hook to gain fan sympathy for HanKyung and against SM. This isn’t David and Goliath, it’s now Camille versus Simon Legree. Certainly a better bargaining position than some cosmetics company.

SM tries to keep fans from panicking, KyuHyun speaks some words of wisdom only to get enough of a backlash that he has to do damage control, and DongHae may or may not have been referring to the case in a week-old comment.
The main thing I’m getting from this – as from previous Kpop perfect storms this year – is just how influential fans can be, or at least seem to be. If this was a Japanese idol group, the management would be, “Here’s the door, GTFO, we can replace you.” (Especially with a group as large as SuJu.) But the strong fan attachment to every member of a popular group is such that there’s probably a valid anxiety that changing the line-up could damage the brand, especially given this kind of situation.
In Japan, JE and especially UFA would maintain their wall of silence while dispensing rough justice on wayward idols. SM is going out of their way to not look the bad guys in the DBSK case as well as this one, and JYP went to see JaeBom like a concerned parent. The intensity and organization of the fan clubs, and their ability to mold opinions and influence sales numbers, surely must play a hand in these battles of hearts and minds.

This is probably exactly what SM didn’t want to happen, with the DBSK3 paving the way for others to follow suit. The big question I have is, who else is going to try the same thing?

Apparently that incident with the skirt-check has scarred Yoona considerably, as she now has a phobia of cameras? How does that work for an idol, exactly, considering her life is spent in front of a camera? And again given her job, shouldn’t she have a slightly thicker skin about people expressing opinions of her?
And on the flip side, how did this become a case of bullying, of all things? Yes, there were some strong opinions and pushiness, but by no means was it a case of intimidation or a power play. Yoona was looking out for Jessica and the group’s own good, apparently, and should be praised for caring.
Though yeah, she still needs to grow a spine. But being in the right means she should be more confident, right?
